Born in St. Kathrines, Jamaica, Owen graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Education degree. Following graduation Owen taught physical education and C.A.L.M. (currier and life skills management), and coached wrestling, rugby and track and field at McNallyHigh school in Edmonton, Alberta. As a former university student, and now as a wrestling coach, education and sport, have always played a significant role in Owens life. As a coach to-day, Owen places equal emphasis on education and the value of personal and team achievement through sport.

Owen credits a lifelong commitment to the sport of wrestling that has allowed him to achieve what he has accomplished so far in life, through educational success and success as a wrestling competitor and national level coach. In his coaching life, Owen teaches aspiring athletes to use the combination of education and their commitment to sport, to achieve greatness in everything they do. After three years of teaching and coaching at McNally high school, Owen took the position of head wrestling coach at LakeheadUniversity. In his first year he was awarded Ontario University Athletic Wrestling Coach of the Year. With his experience in sport administration and governance, Owen also served on a number of Boards, including the Alberta Rugby Association, as the Junior Development Officer; the Druids Rugby Club, as Development Coordinator; and, the Canadian Wrestling Association, as the Athletes’ Representative.

Owen currently serves as the Coaches Representative with the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association and is in his third year with the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS), Wrestling Coaches' Board, serving as Vice-President. In the summer of 2009, he also served as one of Canada’s National Wrestling Team Coaches.

Owen is currently the Varsity Head Coach for the sport of wrestling at the University of Alberta.
